Yesterday, I went "stropless" because I wanted to get a fair comparison of 3 finishing hones I am trying out. Shaving straight off the hone definitely showed me which hone gave the better shave (although all were more comfortable than expected). I concluded that I could shave straight off the hone with any of them, but I would rather strop.
