Thanked: 2My Strop
I bought a dovo leather/canvas strop for my razor. I have a few questions about this. First, on the canvas side there seems to be some kind of waxy paste in the canvas. What is this? all i can think of is that it is a paste for honing/realigning the endge. If this is the case then should i get a finishing hone to maintain the edge or will this canvas to the trick?
P.S.
I have just got my blade honed at straigh razor designs so it should be a while before i need to tend to the edge to that degree.Last edited by GreatBazunka; 10-13-2009 at 06:20 PM.

Are you sure it just isn't just some protective oil/cream thats supposed to protect the fabric from getting wet or for filling in the gaps in the fabric to "soften" the surface. I wouldn't think its preapplied with any type of abrasive cream if it wasn't specified when you bought it.
Btw, did you buy it new or used?

Thanked: 2Yeah, youre probably right. I bought it new and it wasn't specified. it does seems waxy like it is there to fill in the gaps in the canvas.

Thanked: 20Could be Dovo white paste... it's basically oil with chalk in it, I think. Acts like a very mild abrasive.

v76: Do you really think that they would add an abrasive without specifying it? It seems odd to me to spend money on an abrasive without getting anything for it.
Greatbazunka: does it seem transparent or slightly white?

Thanked: 20Well, they got their overhead covered on all their products... if not, they wouldn't be in business.
But that was just an uneducated guess at most, I'll try getting in touch with Dovo or the retailer you bought the strop from... they'll most likely have the correct answer.
