Thanked: 0Can you over strop / linen on back?
Can you over strop a razor?
When do you use the web material on the strop? I have a SRD premium I strop.
Thank you for your time!

There is no such thing as over-stropping... The linen side is used to heat the edge of the blade and make it easier for the leather side to straighten it up. Though IMO a canvas/linen with white dovo paste works like a marvel.

You should only worry about stropping too much when you're using abrasive pastes on your strop...

When I first tried straight razor shaving in the 1980s an old barber showed me how to strop and told me to be careful you can over strop a razor. So when a 70 year old barber with 50 years experience tells you that you believe it. At least I did and that and other things he recommended are probably why I gave it up.
Coming back to it through SRP I followed mparker762's posts on the topic, and thebigspendur's "Grand Experiment". I now do 50 webbed fabric or linen (depends on the day) and 50 leather with the premium 1, a Tony Miller or one of a few vintage strops doing the honors. This is working well for me. YMMV.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

It's not hard to learn. Just remember to count 1 cycle on the strop (up and down) as 1 stroke, etc, etc. etc. And don't try to strop like a 70 year old barber! Your new at it, take your time, get your stroke down, then add the faster strokes. Good Luck!

I suspect for the most part, proper stropping technique is more of a problem for a beginner, than stropping too much. If you haven't read the section on stropping in the Barbering Text, you might want to take a look. There's some good information there.
