A Stroke
What is one stroke on a hone? Is it a pass in one direction or a pass up and back on a stone?

It is usually 1 stroke one way with the plural being both ways IMO. Round trips or laps being up and back. At least that is the way I interpret it. One thing is for sure and that is if I do a number of strokes one way I will do the same number the other.... unless I am doing a bevel correction where more is needed on one side than the other. Once corrected it will go back to the same amount for each side. IME.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I always assume that people are referring to one pass each way when they say "stroke", but I always say lap (like Jimmy) when I'm referring to it because it helps me with OCD

I agree one stroke is one pass each way.

Down and back, there is little use for a one way trip.
