    Default Old hone restoration

I've found this old abused and neglected whetstone in storage that belonged to my grandfather. Apparently he used it for sharpening kitchen knives but I do know that he shaved with a straight razor. It might be a Belgian Coticule.

The one side is this off yellow (spots where its not filthy) and extremely smooth and the other side is this coarse grey material. Like I said , it's really filthy as if particles from the grey side oozed all over the yellow side.

How do I clean this thing and how can I find out if it's a Belgian Coticule or not ? My grandfather never purchased crap :P

    1) Post some pictures
    2) 220 wet/dry sandpaper on a flat surface, then lap the stone. This will make it flat and remove surface "gunk"

Currently my cellphone camera doesn't work and I don't have a digital camera . I'l work on some pictures as soon as I can. Does the fact that the one side is this coarse gray material and not slate rule out the chance that it's a proper Coticule ?

It does look similar. I'm really hoping it worth something to hone with because I'm a student and worth next to nothing at the moment.
