Thanked: 11just joined SRP and wanting to shave!!
well yesterday evening i decided to join SRP since i spent countless hours on here for the past week. i currently don't have a SR but am saving a little money for one. i was looking at the RupRazor Gold dollar with strop combo but kinda wanted a black SR instead of a yellowish one. another possibility would be the Dovo Best Quality Solingen which is more expensive and at the very limit of my budget. i know this will be my 1st SR and i shouldn't be too picky. at the same time il be looking at the classifieds here as well.
its very encouraging to hear newbies on this forum talk about successful 1st shaves as well as ones who haven't had successful ones but continue to try!

Welcome to SRP...you'll find that this is an addicting place.
If you decide to stay with the base model, you can always upgrade those scales to black Straight Razor Maintenance & Repair Needs pinning a razor is easier than everyone makes it out to be if you use the included Dovo pins.
I've seen it take between two and four months before most get a really good shave, so, since you've been reading, you know not to expect miracle your first time out.

Thanked: 11there is a wonderful amount of info here at SRP! would it be worth purchasing the Gold Dollar Razor then eventually upgrading scales? is the Gold Dollar made of good metal or am i better off buying something i saw in the classifieds such as this:
WADE AND BUTCHER SHEFFIELD ENGLAND 5/8 - Straight Razor Place Classifieds
also, are the Dovo handles just for Dovo razors or will they fit something like the Gold Dollar?

Thanked: 259hi and welcome,
as the others have said there is a wealth of info on here from members and on the wiki. the members here are the most helpful you will find anywhere and will help anyone get up to speed on straight shaving.
one thing to consider when buying a straight is the value of the razor as far as how long you will keep it and how great of a shave you will get. there are starter kits from kenrup and others and also great buys on the classifieds here. start out with a good setup and you will not be disappointed. another thing is to make sure the blade is shave ready, this is the most important thing to start with, since it gives a point of reference.
good luck and do not be afraid to ask questions....

Welcome to SRP.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Yes, welcome. I found the forums to be a tremendous source of advice and support when I started. The best advice I've seen in the above replies, is the make sure your razor is shave ready. You can be sure a brand new, straight from the factory will not be. If it says, "shave ready" in the classifieds here, that's a safe bet. This will get you a razor that you can use right away without the added expense of sending it out for honing.

Welcome! I purchased a Dovo Best Quality and find it to be an excellent razor. Keep in mind when you look at the razors some of the cost is in the scales (handle). So, there may be five razors with the same blade but all at different price points.
I ordered a Gold Dollar razor, just to see how it compares and to have something to practice honing on, but the reviews I've read here are pretty good, and that strop/razor package is a pretty good deal. I don't have it yet or I would give you a review.
I know the Gold Dollar from Rup will be shave ready, and depending on where you get the Dovo from it can be shave ready, too. Definitely get a shave ready razor, that way after your first shave you'll know what to expect.
I'm still a newbie, so the only advice I can give you is to go slow and take your time.
