What works for me is to pull the skin on my cheeks nice and tight. I don't get much tugging, but a lot of noise using a full hollow, and the little tugging there is I don't have to worry about digging into my face as much as it is pulled tight.

Thanked: 15I believe that a rough ATG pass can be caused by either the razor is not sharp enough, the angle of the razor, or not stretching the skin. If the razor is nice and sharp, the angle of the blade correct (i.e., the spine a little closer to the skin than on the WTG, XTG passes) and you stretch, it should be fine.
Also short strokes help a bit...
That's my 2c anyway...

Narrowing the angle was what got me going ATG comfortably. That and a very, VERY light touch.

Thanked: 1903I use the blade buffing technique for the ATG pass. There is a nice article on passes in the Wiki which also details the cutting angles required for such.

if you use right technique to shave you don't need AGT. wtg and xtg should be plenty enough
