Thanked: 12The top bowl of the scuttle holds your puck of soap. The bottom basin holds your hot water. Dip the bristles of the brush into the basin through the spout and let the brush soak for a few minutes while you attend to other shave preparations (choosing your razor, washing your face, etc). Then, load the brush with soap from the puck for about a minute. The lathering is done on the face when you use a scuttle, and in my experience it requires a little more patience. The holes in the top portion of the scuttle could be for drainage (though the soap seems to block them) or to aid in heating/softening the soap from below.
