making progress here
It is still a CAREFUL IN HERE situation when I am shaving, which by the way is a very relaxing process for me and I enjoy all the more simply for that reason alone and there are certainly other factors that are beneficial over the "old method" but I shaved again last nite and I think it is the best job I've done so far - no nicks at all - well only a few really really small ones that closed up with the cold water post shave splash. I now officially consider straight razor shaving one of the "finer things in life" many people laugh at me when I explain it to them - I suppose some people will simply never understand huh? I also seem to have picked up on cigars as well, they seem another finer thing in life - I was in Virginia for Thanksgiving and drove back Friday and happened to stop by a J and R store. They just happen to have a mega sized humidor in there stores and a little thing called JR alternatives - yeah they happen to have a website for the same. Ahhhhh the finer things in life indeed. I hope everyone has the BEST day and thanks for reading.

Congrats on your progress. It does nothing but get better. I absolutely hate taking my twin safety when I travel. It can't come close to the shave I get with my straights. I'm even considering buying a double edge for travel. It's too much of a pain to travel with all the straight razor stuff.

Thanked: 39Congrats on the progress. As a newbie myself, I can relate. My progress has been slow and steady. Yesterday I got my first DE quality shave with my str8 with no weeps or bleeds, what I thought quite the accomplishment considering my short time here.
As for airline travel, a str8 razor is fine as long as the bags are checked. A DE can be carried on, but the blades can not! So your options are mail blades to your destination or buy them there.
I have opted to try an injector razor for travel. It is considered a cartridge razor and can be carried on with blade in the razor. I still have not determined if the cartridge of blades is allowed though (probably not).

I haven't even tried shaving with a SR yet. I just picked up some razors this past weekend. I need to keep reading more of these posts to pick up more tips and then I'll give it a try.

jcash1,
Nice post and congrats on the progress! I'm somewhat of a newbie myself--more along the lines of I used to shave with a straight a lot in college, gave it up, and now I'm coming back to it since there's so much more info and resources for sending a razor to be honed.
Be careful with the cigars...you don't want both RAD and CAD! I'm fortunate enough to live where I've got a tobacconist that get's in plenty of Opus X to keep me satisfied Hmmmm, that gives me an idea for what to do with the rest of the evening! Smoke 'em if ya got 'em lol
