Thanked: 10Honing knife carryover
Hi guys,
I decided to do this based on the advice of a friend. I already have a collection of stones I use for my budding kitchen knife collection, so I was wondering if the same stones can be used to hone a razor as well? I only have up to 8k so I'll need to get something higher and a natural stone to finish with, but I wanted to check in with others that have done this.
Now I just need to read up on which razor, brush, cream and aftershave to get.
Glad to be here
Jared

Jared, welcome to SRP!
Unless you have a blade with serious problems the usable grit range for razor hones starts around 1000-1200 (for bevel setting) and goes up to the super high finishing stones in the 30K range (and maybe beyond). So...some of your stones could be great for getting from the bevel setting stage up to the beginning of the polishing range. It would be helpful if you posted some specifics on your stones. There are a lot of guys here that have a very complete working knowledge of virtually all of the stones that are in common usage and I'm sure that you will get some great guidance.

Thanked: 13245Just for reference The Norton set of 1k-4k-8k Water stones is more then capable of honing any razor out there, from trashed, to shave ready.. It is a well known brand of stone so it gives you a cross reference point...
As Bill just pointed out there are tons more out there too...

Thanked: 2591Those should work, you will need a 10k stone and when you learn honing a finisher of some sort. People with more experience will let you know on what a good and decently priced finisher is.
I jumped right into the deep where the expensive stones live, so I am not much help there.
You have , I assume, CrO strop?
You will need a hanging leather strop.

Please do not hesitate to ask questions about anything shave related.
People here are very helpful.Stefan
