Thanked: 0DOVO "Classic" v. "Best Quality"
Hey all,
I am planning to buy a straight razor (and the necessary accessories) for my fiance for Christmas. So far I've got two in mind that are listed as the Dovo "Classic" and "Best Quality" (It seems those are the names of the razors but I could be wrong).
Here's the Classic: DOVO Straight Razors
and the Best Quality:
Vintage Blades LLC*::*Dovo Straight Razors*::*Dovo Carbon Steel Straight Razors*::*Dovo "Best Quality", 5/8" Carbon Steel Straight Razor - "Black" - Professionally Honed
I'm leaning toward the Best Quality (me=poor grad student). I was wondering if you guys had any impressions of either of these? Are they priced appropriately? Is anyone here personally familiar with either?
I appreciate any input, advice or recommendations!!!
Thanks guys,
Cheers

My first razor was a dovo 5/8 and I think its a fine razor. get it in one of the vendors sets thats the way to go, honed and with a strop, should work out great

Go for the deal from Vintage blades, its cheaper and professionally honed which is the main thing.

I would go for the "Best Quality" from Vintage Blades . $80.00 is a great price for a new Dovo that is honed , and ready to use . I've never heard anything negative about Vintage Blades , so I'm sure the razor will be a good one .
Greetings , from Dundalk , Maryland . The place where normal people , fear to go .

Thanked: 0Thanks!
Thanks guys!
I checked out the Straight Razor Designs and it looks like they're consistently about $10 cheaper than Vintage, but Vintage has a "Best Price Guarantee" which could be nice for this (basically $11 off).
Thanks for everything!! I feel much better about these razors hearing good things about them from real people .
You've really helped a lot. I appreciate it!
Cheers

Sounds like a great Christmas gift! You'll want to pick up a razor, strop, a brush and a puck of shave soap at the minimum - he should have anything else he needs for the first few shaves already. Of course, you could upgrade the brush, get some nice shave cream, get a nice bowl or scuttle for the soap, or maybe a leather dopp kit to put this stuff in, but the four items at the top are the basics and should be fine.
I also have the Dovo Best Quality and it's a nice razor. +1 on getting it from Straight Razor Design since they are going to give you a razor that's ready to shave out of the box and I don't think anyone else is offering free honing for life.
On the other hand, Ruprazor.com has a razor and strop set for about $80. It comes with the Gold Dollar Razor and the Filly strop. (There's a link for a review of the razor.)
As for the other accessories, most of these shaving sites should have everything available so you might want to shop around. There may be holiday deals that put these all together at a good price.
This post got me thinking... What's my wife getting ME for Christmas...?

The same blade on either razor, I have 4 Dovos from low to high end, all are good blades. The vendor will make the difference.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain
