Two for now
I have five, all in working order and part of my rotation:
From left to right:
- Geneva Cutlery Pyramid No. 7
- Mastro Livi "New Grind" series
- Robert Williams 8/8 Half Hollow
- Thiers Issard Le Grelot
- Birck and Zamminer "Reliance"
The first one I purchased was the "Reliance." The Geneva Cutlery followed in short order. The TI Le Grelot, Livi, and finally Williams then joined the rotation respectively.
I won't be accumulating at this rate or this lavishly in the new year.
I'm so new that I'm still waiting for my first one to arrive in the mail. So I guess I'll make my answer ....... hmmmmm.......... uhhhhhhhhh ........ wellllllll ....... 1/2 ?
I just started shaving about a month ago and I have two razors, both of which are in my profile picture. I started with one which is a Revisor 6/8" and just today I got a Dovo "Bergischer Lowe" 5/8". Both of them were gifts from my incredible girlfriend.
I started shaving with a str8 over a year ago, and only had one until about a month ago. I've read posts that say it is good to have two, so you can have a comparison razor. That would probably be a good idea. I wish I had seen that advise earlier. Anyway, if you buy shave ready and take good care of it, one should be enough.
hmmmm...
Comparing my count to others makes me think I went a little overboard :hmmm:
As I posted earlier, I started with a shave ready Bengall from the classifieds then bought 9 more from ebay for a total of 10. Maybe a large number, but not a huge outlay of $$$ (except maybe the 4 vintage NOS razors).
Since that post, I purchased a new Boker. My wife bought me a Dovo MOP which I received yesterday (shaves wonderfully btw), and I should receive my Dovo 5/8 Ebony Spike Point today. All are from SRD last month, so they will be "Lynn sharp" forever. :)
So I'm up to 13 now, but only 4 are shave ready. I bought that first Bengall the first week of November. So that's 13 razors in less then 9 weeks! :dropjaw: :gaah: :w
I don't plan to acquire anymore razors for awhile. Yes, I'm aware of what RAD is. ;)
this collection was put together just in the last month
Just getting started here and my OCD is kicking my butt. I've got four live-and-learn pieces of Pakistani garbage. Letter openers, all, apparently.
So I've got a new no-frills Dovo on the way (will be sending it in for a proper sharpening), just bought an old DublDuck (ditto, for an inspection), have an old Liberty on the way and one alleged to be mid-18th century. I've always been fascinated with metalwork (Dad worked on a furnace) and this looks like the kind of transcendant thing I can teach my son and son-in-law, once I've traversed the learning curve myself.
at the moment i have 9 razors. but i shave myself only whit two or 3 of those razors. (not at the same time :D)
I'm at 20+ and that's nothing really, some people have 20 of one type of razor. I have 8 Sheffields, my fav.
I have been really thinking about this lately, esp about what Robin said. I really think 7 is the number I want, 7 quality blades one for each day, and I'm making an effort to do just that.
My problem is worrying if the people I sell to will keep the blade in good shape or let it go to waste, it is after-all an antique, it would be nice to know the blade will be well taken care of.
Cheers
David
I currently have 1 that I shave with. I have another that I am restoring and will save mostly for "special occasions":)
I've been SRSing for less than 1 month and I'm already at 15.
Im new to this and i will tell you, I have a massive urge to get another straight razor for no other reason to have another straight razor,, im reading of restored razors 90 years old ..... the history ... im thinking this could become a problem ....
I strarted with 1 a Cyril R Salter that wasn't shave ready when I got it so didn't use it for over a year, got a shavette to practice with and then sent my 1st straight to be honed (luckily it took a good edge and shaves well).
While it was away, I got my second a Dovo BL, quickly followed that purchase with a Dovo Bismark.
I have just received my 4th a TI Spartacus.
Got a 7 razor pouch when I ordered the TI, so 3 spaces left to fill, any suggestions.
When I started I only had one. It cost me $90 & that was a lot of money in 1983.
It was a 4/8 Gotta 120 & was not shave ready & SRP did not exist. It was a tuff start :boohoo:
I posted earlier but didn't list what I have. So here they are.

I'm just on two razors, waiting for my third one and got my eyes on a fourth one. Started shaving with straight razors about two months ago or something like that.
I probably would have been happy with my Reliance if I hadn't realized that different grinds, widths, etc., cause razors to have drastically different personalities. I didn't buy many safety razors, but I found that the Merkur Slant, which was supposed to offer a rather different shave from other safety razors—well, it just didn't.
When I got my TI Le Grelot, I found it very different from the Reliance and Geneva Cutlery. Comparatively heavy in the hand, but in a comfortable way. Capable of a smoothness I didn't (and still haven't) gotten from the other razors (although that may be my need to build my technique). Then came the Livi and the Williams, both also different from each other and my other razors, with the Williams being a real paradox: probably my biggest, heaviest razor, and yet it feels as maneuverable and nimble as the small classics, but right away capable of the smoothness of the Le Grelot.
Anyway, that's how I came to have so many razors so quickly: it wasn't just a new type of shaving, but a new world of different possible shaves. The luxury of being able have a choice between smells and sensations to begin one's day is truly wonderful. I wish my beard grew faster!
I've been Str8 shaving for about a year and a half and I 7. 4 in my regular rotation.
7, and I have not shaved once yet. :gaah: One is being restored by Undream, one is getting custom by me and the other 5 are sitting here next to me at the comp. STILL WANT MORE!!!
Newbies have at least two. It's in the book of newbiedom.
I have just started out, about two weeks in now.
I started with 2.
I bought a Feather DX disposable, just in case i wasn't able to maintain an edge on a proper blade.
And I have also purchased a Dovo Bergischer Löwe.
I'm planning on mastering these 2 for a little while, before buying any more.
But I shave my head as well and would like at least one more for now.
I think I will purchase a Mastro Livi, they look nice.
It is just 3 weeks since I got my first straight and gave myself a first shave with one, so I am really a rookie but already I am hooked on the whole straight razor experience!
I got started with a Dovo Best Quality 5/8 razor with black scales, with a really ready-to-shave-sharp blade honed by Lynn at SRD.
Then almost at the same time I ordered a Revisor 6-0004 also with black scales because I thought this just looked great.
Soon coming up, I hope it is on its way through the mail, is a Wacker Antik 6/8 with horn scales. This also is a looker and on the German forums and here also I read positive reviews so I am curious how that one turns out.
Then I am thinking of getting a custom razor one day, but that is a long way up the road.
A Robert Williams or Frank Warner or Maestro Livi or, oh well…
Thanks,
Paul
I have been losing sleep following auctions on ebay I never bid on then kick myself when I see a filly 13 for 150 US. Or just losing sleep checking the classified or if people update their website. I'm not starting at the beginning. I started in the new year got a palmer 5/8 for 50 bucks. Loved it and love it more and more, until there was rust in the pins. Had to send it away so I got a a henckels 5/8 round point which I am using now and absolute love to death. Great shaver but to be honest I don't have a good basis to compare. I shave regularly - every one and half days on average and it is so relaxing. What's in the post? Filly 14 with carbon fibre handles, Wade and Butcher 13/16 Chopper, Le Grelot and just today I bought a Wapi off ebay (first ebay purchase)... But how much do I have on the list, ALOT. And my list gets longer and longer every day. Like Sham says it really is like a virus and I can't control it, though I have managed to stop myself before buying countless times - there is some sort of self-restraint but uncontrollable urges behind them. I am so glad to hear there are others like me. :beer1:
Right now I have 3 in rotation:
1 Bresduck Lifetime Jr.
1 sweet J.R. Torrey that I picked up from senior member Mainaman
1 6/8 Dovo Bismarck (the gorgeous red one with "mother of toilet seat") purchased from SRP and honed by Lynn.
After shaving with the Bismarck for the first time and discovering the true meaning of "honed" I was hooked. It's turned into an obsession for a number of reasons. All you have to do is browse the restoration threads and find gurus like Maximilian and Glen and you want one of each…
So now I have 5 more in need of restoration and honing; I plan to send the promising ones off to a pro for honing before I determine their restorability. I'll be shaving with all of them but will practice honing and experiment with restoration on those which would be least likely to get me banned from this board for doing so.
This rabbit hole goes to China, anyone coming?
I now have 5 straight razors. The first is a Dovo I got from SRD and I still love it. The second is a Gold Dollar I got to compare against the Dovo and to have another in rotation. The third is a cheap one from Amazon that's supposed to be a good shaver with some work. Haven't gotten around to working on it yet. The last two I got off eBay. Both are high-end razors that need some work and should make good shavers. Haven't gotten around to those either.
I also have a cheap DE that does a very good job for the money. I also use it on my head when I have the time, otherwise I use an electric on my head.
I am about two months in so very much a newbie. I was immediately stricken with RAD. So far I have 12. A couple of Dovos, three Henckels, an Anchor Wester Bros, a Faour, a Boker, an Engels, a Maher and Grosh, a Wade & Butcher, and a no name with a cool handle I bought to practice my skills getting a razor shave ready. I have enjoyed shaving with each of them but at the moment I seem to have a slight preference for the Faour and the Boker. I am pumping the brakes on acquisitions for awhile so I can spend some quality time with each of the razors I have so far. Could I be getting along just fine with any one of these razors? Of course. It is just really fun exploring a small bit of the variety out there.
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop???
:):):):)

Lazarus, you sound like me! We seem to have about the same taste in razors as well.
H. Boker "King Cutter", Freidr., Baurman & Sohne "Comfort", Landers Frary & Clark "222", Levering Razor Co. "Artist", Geo. Savage and Sons 8/8, Geo Wostenholm and Sons "IXL", Friedmann and Lauterjung "Electric Cutlery Co.", Wester Bro. "Anchor" 5/8, Wester Bro. "Anchor" 3/16. Not shown are a George Wostenholm and Sons "IXL" Celebrated, Genco Lincoln, "Cast Steel" 6/8 Wedge. The last three need new scales, as does the Savage. Now I am starting in on the old strops... A few old Illinois, a nice old loom and a few that I am making myself... What's next, brushes?

Crap. I forgot. I picked up an old Bismarck yesterday. And I have a Wade and Butcher and another Wosty in the works. The wife is going to flip.
I've lost count...I started with four, but best as I can remember I've gotten at least four and maybe more since Christmas of last year. Just can't stop.
I've got RAD--and I've got it bad...
A Dovo Best from SRD , TI I got at Art of Shaving, Boker from a local antique shop, JR Torrey I got on ebay, 2 Dubl Ducks I got on ebay, and last but not least a Sheffield I got at a local antique store.
So far I've used the Dovo, the TI, one of the Ducks.
I shaved with a straight for the first time on 24 January 2010. Things are going well and I am enjoying it very much.
Cheers to all!!

Similar tastes indeed. You say you are getting ready to work on some strops? Get this, I have a beautiful old belting leather briefcase I never use anymore and I have been eying it and thinking "hey that old belting leather might make some nice strops". So basically I am thinking about destroying a briefcase that cost around $800 twenty years ago to make some strops that could be purchased for around $50-$60. It concerns me a bit that this strikes me as perfectly reasonable. I welcome opinions as to the lunacy or brilliance of such a course of action.
New guy here. I have a Wester from Bob Keyes that now has 5 shaves on it...and coincidentally, that's the same number of days shaving with a straight! I have a W.H. Samples & Sons (eBay purchase), just finished by Mr. Keyes and soon to be on its return trip to me. There is a dubl duck dwarf that just arrived and needs to be sent off for a buff & hone. And now there's a dubl duck special # 1 enroute from a seller. And soon to be shipped another dubl duck, but a satinedge. sheesh!
5th day shaving with a straight, and now I'm the owner of 5! There's a name for this that escapes me at the moment.
I agree with the others: most newbies start with two razors, including me. I admit I started with two because of a buying blunder on my part, but it worked out for the best.
Starting with two is a neat way of seeing how razors can take on "personalities", in addition to holding off any honing for a longer period of time if rotated regularly.
