Good thoughts to remember Alan.
I always always think don't screw up the edge before I even pick up the razor. LOL

As I'm still in the learning curve these basics are something I still focus on every time (well almost, I'm not perfect). I'm sure I have bad habits already and I try to ferret them out and eliminate em.
Yet one of my fundamentals and the reasons I started straight shaving and restoring is patience. I need more of it and the only way to get it is to practice it. When I forget to exercise these fundamentals you speak of and I have a bad shave, or I get impatient and damage a restore requiring me to go back some steps to fix it. I try to remind myself...
"This is not a race, be patient, this is the lesson I am ultimately here to learn."

Thanked: 198+1 alan. what i gleem from reading your post is that your never to much an old hand at this to remember the basic mechanics of straight shaveing. no matter what we do, the small things have to be observed, to achieve not only that BBS shave, but that precious nirvana/zen, that is strived for. that precious point where man and razor become one. not unlike chevy chase running around a putting green in caddyshack telling us to be the ball, i guess we could say, "be the razor"

Ya know that hit the nail on the head..
I am not new to this, been using a straight for years, pretty much think I have it down, and as c0cky as that sounded.... Every single time I get ready to strop, I still think to myself,,,, "Don't screw up the edge"
I also agree with the lather 2 times before I make 1 pass routine...
