    Default Factory shave ready

Today I used the Boker "The Celebrated" 7/8 hollow ground razor, which my SWMBO gave me for Christmas, to shave half of my face in order to feel the difference between a factory shave ready blade and my regular Gold Dollar 6/8 hollow ground which was previously honed by Ken Rup. I was kind of thinking in the back of my mind that it couldn't be that big of a difference. Man was I wrong. The factory "shave ready" edge took the hair off my face, but not in a very smooth or pleasant way - at least not as smooth or pleasant as I'm used to with my regular shaver. Just thought I'd share that experience with everyone.

i've tried some factory edges, from current production, as well as from vintage razors. i've found that they used to be pretty good.
although i'm yet to find one that's really where i want it to be.

Each time this happens it piles evidence on what we know as you have stated and are still waiting for contradictory evidence. You gotta touch these babies up before you use them happily.

I remember my local barber telling me that I was crazy for wanting to shave with a straight razor because, "even new they pull more than they cut"

Wow...a barber who doesn't know what a sharp razor feels like...
You know I was just thinking the other day how sad it is that I can't even go to my local barbershop and get a nice straight razor shave. I suppose there's just no demand for it anymore. It really would be nice on occasion though.

    Default Factory Shave Ready

    Gentlemen,

Progress has come along and sapped the fun out of many things, including the pleasure of experiencing a straight razor shave at the local barbershop — the center of the universe.

As for a factory shave ready razor, I must concur with the learned gentlemen on this forum and, in most cases, opt for a touch-up on the blade before the first shave.

I suppose factory-sharp razor might work with a light beard. For a dense forest of a beard such as mine, however, with rare exceptions, the factory-sharp blade becomes an obstinate blade.

    Regards,

    Obie

To make it a little more interesting - Though the blade didn't really pass my shave test, it did pass the hanging hair test quite well.

My beard is pretty light and patchy. Perhaps that is the reason that, though it wasn't so comfortable, it still removed a decent ammount of whiskers.
