Thanked: 0Shaving technique for noob
Just started shaving with a straight. I'm still waiting for my straight razor but temporarily I'm shaving with one of those disposable ones I believe its called a shavette. My techniques getting better with each shave but I still find that I can't get a BBS shave on my neck. I regularly do two passes and have even tried a third but I still can't get that super close shave on my neck and I believe it has something to do with the growth of the grain.
Any suggestions as to what to do? Will the real straight I'm waiting for make a difference? Thanks.

Ahh the neck... I look like a contortionist shaving my neck and it is indeed due to the way the neck hairs grow. One thing that helped me to was to wait until I had a couple days growth on and then I spent time 'studying' and feeling the hairs on my neck. I have a swirl pattern on each side of my neck that is a bear to get smooth but I found with a small change to my shaving technique I could mow em all down.
You'll get there, it's just a very tough place to shave for most guys.

My neck haris grow from left to righ almost perpendicular to the length of my neck. I will start with my method with a DE safety razor first, which was to shave once in the downward direction, then, from right to left against the grain on the second pass. This results in a very close shave.
The story is a little different with a straight. I cannot go directly against the grain, so I go at a slight diagonal which works extremely well.
