looking for razor with fatter blade
Hey
I'm new here, although I learned to shave with a straight when I was 13 I haven't used it in over 10years. I'm 26 now and want to get back into it, but have a few questions first. I've still got my old Wade n Butcher my Grandad gave me but it needs to be honed so until then I want to get another razor or 2 but I'm looking for one with a wider blade, like the meat clever style ones. I like it purely for looks, but is there any difference in the way it shaves or strops? What size or type should I be looking for? I've bid on a Butcher Chopper razor on ebay that I really like, do the chopper ones usually have a wider blade? When I say wider I mean from the shaving edge to the non-shave edge, not the length of the blade. Thanks

Welcome to SRP. Cool to have grandpa's razor and a W&B is even cooler. You can find 7/8 blades new production occasionally. Most of the blades larger than 6/8 are going to be customs or vintage. Most beginner's and veteran shavers alike find a 5/8 or a 6/8 the easiest to start out with IMO. I've read that the 5/8 is the biggest seller among all of the sizes.
Check out the SRP Wiki beginner's guide here and Lynn's suggestions for the first straight razor shave. Make sure that whatever you start out with it is professionaly honed to shave ready. You can find members who offer that service here.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
