    Default Hello there!

Glad to meet you folks. I received a straight razor for Christmas, after I had made several comments about how much I love the shave my barber had given me with a straight razor.

To say I'm new to the whole idea would be an understatement, but I've been lurking here since X-mas day, reading the FAQ, and even watching Plexuss' stropping video, ToxIkWaste's honing video, and Lynn's video as well.

I have not attempted a real shave yet, as I don't believe my stropping is anywhere near decent enough, and I'm sure the store-bought razor that is claimed to be "sharp" is not truly sharp enough for my sensitive face.

Looking forward to perfecting the craft with your help

    Xavier,

Happy New Year and welcome to SRP.

As you alredy know, you'll find lots of useful information on the website to help you perfect your str8 razor skills--stropping, holding the blade at the correct angle, etc. Don't worry too much about achieving perfection with your stropping at this point. Good is good enough. There is is a long learning curve when it comes to the use of a str8 razor. Even the most experienced str8 razor user is still perfecting his skill.

BTW...Where did you purchase your srtr8 razor? Did they offer professional honing with their razors like Straight Razor Designs or Vintage Blades? Check and see if they did. If they did, you're ok. If not you can always get it professsionally honed by SRP's founder, Lynn Abrams, before you shave with it. There may even be an SRP member in your area who could perform that task for you. Believe me, shaving with a professionally honed razor will make a world of difference when it comes to your str8 razor shaving experience.

Again, welcome aboard and take care...

Thank you for the welcome sir,
The razor she picked up for me is a Fromm, and does not come with anything but what I assume is the factory grind. It's sharp enough to cut, but not sharp enough to glide through the hair on the face.

I also purchased Gary Haywood's Dovo Bismark. Not that I think anything is wrong with the Fromm per se, but since I won't be doing my own honing (yet anyway), it seems like I should have two to switch out as I send them to Lynn.

Xavier at first Welcome to SRP.
To send them honed by Lynn is a great idea. You will get the best edge is out there.
The little problem i think is your Fromm. if it is new made one then that From is PITA.
    enjoy and have fun.

I'm not surprised to hear you say that. I googled reviews of the Fromm, and although no one seemed to outright call it a piece of junk, no one was complimentary either. Nothing I can about it though. It was a Christmas gift from the wife, so it will be around forever!

    welcome to SRP,
+1 on getting your straights shave ready. once you get them back from being honed and you start shaving with them, i am sure as most here will agree, that you will never go back to the disposable razors again...ask all the questions you have. there will be lots of members willing to help you with all of your questions...good luck

I appreciate that, I was about to start a search to see if anyone has discussed this youtube video of Liam Finnegan. He appears to be an old time barber stropping a razor, but it's the opposite of everything I have read. He holds the strop very loose. But I assume he's been doing it forever and knows how to get a blade sharp; so it definitely confused me.
