    Default Man I hate disposibles

Well the other day I took my second chance with a DE(grandpas old gillete fatboy?) nicked myself a few times, BURNED the heck out of my neck. Still waiting on my golden dollars from rup and had to shave so pulled out the disposible straight I have. No burn but several nicks. This after going extreme(for me)
    balm
    HOT towel
    lather
    hot towel
    lather
    shave
    Steptic pencil
    warm rinse
    cold rinse
    balm

Sure hope a REAL str8 fixes things

Most of us end up here because we dislike disposables for one reason or another but let me make it clear to you that it will not be the straight that "fixes things" but rather proper prep and proper technique.
Remember, it is rarely the tool that is the problem, so, when you get your new straight practice, practice, practice!

Sounds like you need less prep and more technique pratice.

Never used a DE so I wouldn't be able to comment on its uses. I've used western and Japanese straights. It's prep time, proper techniques and skills.

There was a saying by famous chef who said something along the lines "German knives, Japanese knives...it doesn't matter if given unto hands of inexperienced or poor user they'll immediately destroy the knife."

    I'm still learning to date.

We've all nicked ourselves one point or another, learn from it and move on.

    My dear Smills,

Mark (JMS) speaks words of wisdom and I agree with everything he says. (Good points, Mark.) Although I shave straight, I still have special fondness for my Edwin Jagger "Chatsworth" barley double edge with Feather blades. I use it only when in extreme rush.

Even with the double edge, I take care to prepare my Hollywood face properly and to shave with care. So be patient and practice. It might take a little time, but it is worth it.

    Regards,

    Obie

I will say that the disposable blades are wicked sharp, not that smooth, and less forgiving in my opinion, but nicking yourself is a technique flaw lol. The razor didn't magically cut you. It will all come in good time and I think you will enjoy the much nicer shave off of a real straight.

It sounds like you need to work a bit on your prep, but also when using a DE you do not need to use pressure. Let the weight of the razor do the work for you. I have a couple of Gillettes and use the red personna blades and the only time I have razor burn or nicks is when I get too aggressive and use pressure with them. Pressure issues is one of the biggest things to unlearn when using DE's or straights. Pressure = cuts and razor burn.

Read up on how to properly prep your face, make sure you have a really good lather and keep practicing. Shaving is an art as much as it is a necessity

you may be using to much pressure with that DE it doesnt take much just the weight of the razor
