Thread: Art of Shaving Razors

Thanks to all for the help on this one.
Another question is: how important is it to have two razors for a newbie? Would it make sense for me to buy one of TAOS TI razors and a vintage from the forums here? I figure that way I have a comparison for the TI and can practice my honing skills as well.
Or am I just getting too advanced for a newbie?
TIA!

Sort of like working on cars.
You have to have a second so you can go get parts.
If you want to tinker AND shave you need two (or more).
Lots of folk do fine with one razor.
If you only have one you can always
default to a wet shaving alternate, DE
or even tossaway (which qualifies as a
second car in this game).
It is up to you....
My hint to you is to go for one at a time.

HBirdman80,
Just had a look at the AOS website.
Their razor for $135 looks identical to the TI Spartacus I got from a site in the UK. The other razors look like the same blade, just different scales so may not be worth going for them. I know the 1 for $135 looks like plastic scales, but mine feels fine.
I got it on Monday but only got a chance to shave with it this morning. I did a quick 1 pass WTG and must admit it felt better that a quick 1pass WTG from my Mach3.
If you can get 50% discount on it, go for it.
If you plan on learing to hone yourself, best to get at least 1 good shave ready to use as a benchmark.

Art of Shaving Razors
Hello, HBirdman80,
From what Lynn notes, these Thiers-Issards are well put together.
If your discount is that substantial, I would buy the razor and send it to Lynn or another honemeister of choice to hone. I would start the razor's maiden voyage with a professional hone.
On the other hand, don't forget you also have the choice of a shave-ready Dovo from a number of vendors. You might not receive the same discount for the razor, but then you will save on the honing fee. I think Moderator Thebigspendur makes this point clearly, and I agree with him.
Oh, what a sweet decision to make on buying a straight razor. Good luck and enjoy.
Regards,
Obie

Thanked: 3Use the discount. Just get it honed by SRD. I haven't gotten one honed by them yet but look around.... it's clear they're the best.

HBirdman80 / Obie,
Just to say my TI was factory shave ready out of the box. It might be the same for the AOS ones also.
With your discount, give one a try, if you don't feel that it is shave ready for you, you can then send it out to be honed.
Stuart.
