    Default 1st straight razor purchase

Any input would be appreciated on the recent purchases I just made. The 1st razor, "Simmons" the neck of blade has "Simmons Hardware Co. Germany 1430 and the other razor has "Gold Medal" on the neck and the box says "E. J. Khouri & Bros. New York, Made in Usa. I'm just curious if they are good razors for a beginner and if I need to do anything else with them before having them honed. Thanks

I've not used either brand before, but they look like they'll be fine shaver once honed.

    all the best

    Welcome,

They should be fine. Clean them up and have them honed and you should be ready to go. Use the time in between to read up on beard prep and how to get started with you first shave. Check out the beginner section of the wiki.

    Have fun,

    Lynn

They both look good. Love the scales on that Simmons. The wiki is here and the beginners section is here. There's an article by Lynn advising on that first shave here. (Have fun is key.)

If you want to polish them up yourself, Maas or Flitz should do the trick. Use floss to get into the pivot area. It will take off gold wash or bluing, though.

If you can't hone yet, check out the classifieds on SRP. After that, post an update with photos!

make sure and get them honed by a professional and when they are shave ready, start you adventure into straight shaving.. the one with the yellow handle looks a lot like a "karbono special steel" that i have and it is a great shaver. i am sure these will be also...good luck
