    Default BBS Question

    Question.

My beard usually grows in pretty quick, and the only time that my face stays BBS for a long time is when I used a multi-blade cartridge razor that did the old 'pull and cut below the skinline' shave. Well, I'm progressing to ATG on my straight shaves and after a whole day i'm still BBS on my cheeks.
So here is where I'm confused. I'f a straight razor does not pull the hair and cut below the skin, how is it still smooth? Cause it should have already grown back by now?

I think straights lift a little too. That is why we start with a WTG pass, if we went straight to ATG the whisker would pull back below the skins surface and give ingrown hairs. Plus if your prep is good your pores open up and expose more whisker, then when you splash on the aftershave the pores close and conceal the whisker. But this is just all speculation on my part.

Also, the ATG is at a very low angle with a straight, and cuts the hair off almost parallel to the surface of the skin. A higher angle below-the-skin cut (as you are forced into with a cartridge) will leave a needle-like point on one side of the hair, which gets caught in the follicle....

So, you ARE cutting below the skin, just in a fashion which is less prone to irritation. Cheers!

So are you saying that a stra8 is supposed to cut a little below the skin?
I'll try the smaller angle and see if that helps avoid ingrown hairs more.

Its a mix of the better prep and skin stretching I reckon.

I dont do an ATG pass as it wrecks my face. In fact, the barber at Trumpers told me never to do one, as you massively increase the chance of ingrown hairs. To each their own however, and if ATG works for you then I see no problem with it. Its just I cant do it myself..!

I stop at the XTG pass; With proper skin stretching and good prep I can get a BBS shave that lasts all day!
