Thanked: 2Beginner to beginner Rup Razor set
Over the last couple weekends I've been working to learn about straight shaving. I wanna offer some hopefully helpful tips.
The kit by Rup Razor is a great starter let me say 1st. Best price to really test the waters. Blade is nice, a great sharp edge and the only negative is the cheapo scales but hey you can always replace them. The Filly strop is an excellent deal. The price is incredible and the back side even has crox on it.
Stropping... If hanging above you try to hang the knot at nothing much more they eye level or hand as straight out from you as you can get. This way when you pull it you can tuck ur elbow to your body and not tense every muscle.
-Dont pull to hard it only needs to be kept from saging
-Figure out which way feels best a side grip standing aside the strop or at its end.
-You dont need to push or press down on the razor, let it glide over the strop with just enough grip to keep the razor in position.
-Practice the razor flip with butter knifes or on a flat hard surface that way you decrese the number of nicks in your strop...trust me i learned hard...
-Dont think when the razor is going across the stop it needs to make lots of noise... if it does chances are your probly pushing down or rocking on the edge... you will likely see lil dust particles from ur strop if turning the edge into it. ...also dulling ur edge
-Relax and enjoy...the worst that happens is you cut ur $20 strop, dull ur razor (20bux at most to rehone) or slice yourself a little which always heals...
Just take your time and good luck.... PS watch the videos and read the threads there are sooo many ppl here willing to help...

I will reaffirm that Ken makes a great product. if you wanna practice razor stropping rather than use something completely different than a razor, buy an unhoned razor or a crap razor and blunt it and practice with that. It helped me.

+1 on the Filly strop. I bought one first thing, and it's been serving me quite well. I'm also quite pleased that the few nicks I put on it aren't on the Tony Miller strop I intend to buy one day.
