YouTube - How To Build And Apply Traditional Shaving Lather
Here a couple of good places to start. I have never used a shave stick so I can't help you there but I would agree with Obie and get a regular high quality soap or cream and go from there (there are lots of them out there).

geruchtemoaker,
I too have had problems making really good, moist lather, but I may have overcome that problem today.
I made my first uberlather today. It really filled my shaving bowl, held to the brush and my face and stayed moist the entire time that I was shaving.
The following is my technique:
After soaking your brush in the shaving bowl or bathroom sink w/ hot water, empty the water from your bowl and shake the excess water from your brush. Then use your slightly moist brush to create some lather on your brush with a puck of shaving soap. The soap needn't be expensive.
Second, place your brush in your shaving bowl and add some of your favorite shaving cream and 3-4 drops of glycerin, which you can get from any drugstore.
Mix the above ingredients well with your brush for approx. 40-60 seconds. The result ought to be a rich, moist, luxurious shaving lather.
Take care...
