Thread: Newbie! Am i forgeting something?

Hey guys im totally new at this straight razor thing, i have bought a used DOVO razor, was wondering if those hard soaps sold on ebay are worth trying out? like this one im looking to get a simpson badger brush, natural stone for honing 4k/8k grit? and a strop, and a Conk mug am i missing anything?

These r just suggestions but i would get:

Soap: VDH soap form walmart is great for beginners( comes with a bowl and brush and puck for 7 bucks)

Strop: the filly form ruprazor( 20 bucks)

Id hold off on the hone until you get everything else and start shaving with the straight

Is the used Dovo shave ready?

Don't know about the soap, but at $5 might as well give it a shot. If you haven't had your first shave yet, I don't think you'll be needing that hone any time soon. Otherwise the list looks good to me.

You said you bought/will buy a used Dovo - did you buy it shave ready? That'd be my first concern. If it's not shave ready, you'll need to send it out for honing. I'd suggest the Member Services section in the Classifieds here.

I would say No, but others might say go for it.

If you haven't done so yet, I'd check out the Classifieds here. There are usually a few razors for sale at about that price point and you will know you're getting a shave ready razor (so long as it says it's shave ready). There are usually a lot of "Sold" postings, so go through all the pages to see if there isn't something there that strikes your fancy. IMO, it's a good place to look for a first razor because you can guarantee the razor will be shave ready.

No worries - just send it for a honing. If you had a shave ready razor on hand, you could compare them and see if it's got a good edge. You might be able to shave with it, but as a newbie I would definitely suggest having a guaranteed shave ready razor, just to eliminate that variable and learn what a correctly honed razor feels like.

You might ask where the seller originally bought it and/or who honed it. For all you know it's got a great edge!

ok ill do that if anything ill send it to classic shaving to get honed correctly

i have checked out his videos on you tube do u guys think i should buy the honing stones and do it myself if need be? after all i have to learn sometime looks like fun too!
