I need to tell someone!
After getting a AOS starter kit for Christmas, I've become interested.
After stumbling onto a "Wetshaving" thread on my Cigar forum, I became more interested.
And now, I'm on SRP.
The whole point is, it brought back oodles of memories of watching my grandfather shave when I was a kid. The 'whipped up' cream, the raspy tone as he made each pass... it brings me back.
It has now enticed me to request my grandfather's razor strop and razors.
> I found one stop that was in the basement that is now speckled with mold.
> The one he last used, in all of its worn-out glory, still hanging on the back of the bathroom door.
> And a request for his razors, as my uncle had taken them for saftey a few years earlier.
They've arrived!!!!
I haven't gone over to get them (2) yet, but my mother called to let me know that my uncle had found them easily and brought them down with him this Saturday!!!
He has even volunteered to tell me what he can about shaving and stropping them. (I'll ask and listen, as more 'tribal knowledge' will never hurt)

Congrats. Those heirlooms will be very meaningful to you as you learn this art. Enjoy the journey, Sir

Keep us posted. Family stories are fun to tell and listen to.

Congrats indeed. I was able to get one razor from a family member. Even though it's not my best shaver it will always be one of my favorites. So enjoy

have fun
you may want to be careful with that mold though, these things are generally not very healthy and you may be better off just thrashing it.

Very cool to have family heirlooms to shave with.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanks to all.
I look forward to all the insight as I do progress further down this slope.
I didn't actually take the cellar one, nor do I intend on actually using the old ones. I am going to look into how I can clear/kill the mold before I bring it up/home, and am looking at it more as a decoration than a tool.
I intend on buying a new one, once I find a 'Made in USA' stop that suits.

Thanked: 5Wow. I really wish I had some shaving tools used by my forefathers. I guess I'll have to start the tradition...
Don't look for a 'Made in USA' strop - Just make one!! If you have a Tandy Leather store in your town you can have a super nice strop for <$20 in 10min. Then, when you nick hell out of it, you won't feel bad about rebuilding it (and will know EXACTLY what you want the next one to be like...).
Please let us know what razors your uncle brings over!

Very cool. You are very fortunate to get those razors. My father gave me my great-grandfather's razors. It is a great experience shaving with them. I am very happy for you.
