Thread: Can scales be re-used?

My 1st razor is this Blue Bell:

I really like it but the scales seem a bit to big and heavy for the 5/8 razor. The pins do not look adjustable or removable on it.

I am thinking about getting this 8/8 Henckels Friodur:

I got a similar one on eBay that has the same olive scales as my Blue Bell and it seem to fit the big razor well. The Shave Shop scales look a little small for the big blade and the scales on this one has adjustable stainless steel hardware. Could I use a Dremel or something to drill out the pivot pin on the Blue Bell without damaging the olive scales and then buy some adjustable stainless steel hardware somewhere to switch the scales on the two razors?

yes you can unpin a razor. you can either put it back together with micro-fastners or re-pin with brass rod. If you have a look in the wiki there is tutorials on how to do all this.

You need to really watch the heel on the 8/8 Friodurs that is where the problem lies....
In fact there is a bit of a difference in the contour of the 7/8-vs-8/8

I can't say whether it will work or not, unless I can hold them in hand, but very few scales will fit the 8/8 Friodurs correctly/safely....There are also sometimes fitting issues with the tang, I always try to use a 3rd pin when making scales for the big Henckels...

You might really want to go throught the Gallery of customs and restores and look at some of the designs that have gone on those...

What I am saying is it usually isn't just slap on a set... But luck is luck and it might all work fine...

I don't know your skill level, but I bet one of these pros could do it for a reasonable price....I have screwed up many a scale. I would hate to see someone mess up a neew set.

Unless you have a drill press it can be tricky to remove them unscathed.

+1 on this.

The larger blades need scales that match or at
least fit (all razors).

If the replacement scale set is even a millimeter
short of deep enough you will get cuts from the edge.
It need not extend visibly from the bottom to get a nick.

Before you do anything are the scales too heavy
for the blade or do they just look thick and heavy.
Try and find the balance point between the blade
and scales with the blade fully open as if you were
taking it to the strop or hone. Compare and contrast
with other razors in your collection.

A razor that is ill balanced or ill pinned so it flops about when stropping is a pain.
