Getting to know my face
Hello, Greg:
I am impressed with your progress. Good for you. That you continue to experiment and improvise on the way to honing your skill is commendable. I think you are are a perfect example of a dedicated straight razor shaver who tries to get it right. Congratulations, my friend.
That you quote part of a line from my novel "Will's Music" makes my day even better than it has been so far. Thank you, sir. "Will's Music" is a gentle and sentimental love story written a romantic fool, who also happens to be straight razor shaver. That's why I always emphasize the romance in shaving with a straight razor.
As an aside, my current novel has a straight razor shaving scene. The book is finished and I am working on the final revisions. I think I will expand the straight razor scene a bit more, without boring the readers to death. I haven't decided on the protagonist's straight razor brand, though. I expect to get to that scene in the next two weeks as I revise daily. I'll decide by then. I'll consider any ideas that come my way. Currently I mention the Dovo "Bismarck," but I think I will change that to something else. What, I don't know yet. Anyway . . .
Now, back to shaving. I know you'll be pleased with the Truefitt & Hill's Ultimate Comfort (unscented) shaving cream. I think it is one of the best. I have used it for years and am never without it.
I like your method of keeping lather warm, too, especially since you are mindful not to make it to warm, which will break up the lather.
Keep working on your shaving skills and keep us informed. Thanks for your detailed post.
Regards,
Obie

Excellent suggestions, Greg, I'll definitely try swinging the scales down. The problem I'm having with the glasses is that I have some beard growth on the highest points of my cheekbones, just under the lens of my glasses. I have a feeling that part will just have to be shaved "blind". After reading your posts I think I might not be leaning in as close to the mirror as I maybe should be while learning, always better to see more than less, I think.
Thanks for the suggestions, it's great to have someone to learn with.
Best,
Greg

Obie's Gems
Obie,
Thanks! I'm definitely in this for the long haul. As you know, being husband, dad, and bread-winner means a lot of sacrificing of one's time. Straight shaving is a little daily retreat from the world, and I'm enjoying every minute of it, despite the learning curve.
Look forward to me dropping more of your quotes into my posts. I can't wait to turn each page - not only to follow the plot, but to discover more of your "gems". I've added "the establishment" and the eunuch phrase to my daily use. Can't wait for the new novel. Hopefully the Bismarck won't end up on "the cutting room floor", but I'll understand if it's not compatible with the protagonist.
Humbly,
Greg

Thursday's shave
Today went great, and my confidence is building. I only had to use glasses when doing my neck below the chin. My "trouble spot" seems to be the 1-2" of my left cheek immediately adjacent to the vertical portion of my door knocker. Its going to take some experimentation to figure out how to completely get those whiskers. The first & second pass definitely knock them down some, but stubble remains. They grow at a really steep downward angle. It may take ATG. The equivalent hairs on the right side are easily subdued with XTG. It's probably my technique on the non-dominant left side, but I'm also wondering if it in part may be an idiosyncrasy of the hair growth on the left.
I mentioned on my FaceBook page that I've taken up str8 razor shaving. Boy did that elicit varied responses. They ranged from insinuations that I'll cut my face off to a tongue-in-cheek offer to shave me from a former employee with coordination issues. She said she learned to use a straight razor by watching Whoppi in "The Color Purple".
Going to have to get up a few minutes earlier to avoid being late to work. Getting up early - not one of my strong suits.

Just had to add this comment
An incredibly smart & funny female friend of mine just put this on my FB post announcing that I've taken up SR shaving:
"LIKE! My grandfather had the most gorgeous Rolls razor in a chrome case. There's something slightly erotic about the danger of it. Ew, did I just mention my grandfather and erotic in the same paragraph? I gotta go to my counseling session now."

This morning's shave
This morning's shave was the best yet! Didn't use my glasses at all. Afterwards I ran my hand, then my safety over my face, I hardly missed a thing and zero nicks! I did 3 passes - WTG, XTG, ATG. (see my comments to mainaman (Stephan) in the thread "Straight Razor Place Forums » Welcome Center » Beginners » 2nd shave...questions" I'm definitely learning to lighten my grip, and it makes things so much better.
Have I mentioned how much I love shaving with a str8???

Glad to hear you're progressing so well, Greg! Sorry about having to get up early...the sacrifices we make for straight razors, eh?
