Default My first post on SRP! Hello all! First straight shave.

This is my first post on SRP, joining here was inspired by me having a great first straight shave.

So I was back at my parents house for mothers day, and my sister was there. She is a hair stylist and while I we ended up discussing shaving she mentioned that she had a "Straight razor" in her kit. I looked at it and pondered, then I asked if I could borrow it. She said that she got it in her school and it was less than five dollars. It looked just like...

I was very skeptical, but last night, I tried it. I went WTG with no difficulty, I was scared at first but after every stroke I gained confidence. Once I finished the WTG pass it was smooth, still a little stubly, but smooth. I then re-lathered and did an XTG the pass even better, still at this point, no nicks or weepers or and blood. I am very excited at this point and try and brave an ATG pass. I managed it successfully to a BBS shave, with only a few small blood droplets forming underneath my chin on the third pass. My wife then felt my face, after watching this entire process, cringing the entire time!!! She was amazed by how smooth it was. So after this success, in my opinion, I am going to shave again with this one more time. If I get another good shave I will be aquiring a straight here within the month.
Has anyone else shaved with one of these, do you guys think that it will be harder with a real straight? I am kind of apprehensive again about another straight, wondering if it will be more difficult. Any more advice will be helpful! I can't wait for another straight shave, I hope its as good as the first.
    Thanks for reading!

Welcome; Looks as though you have done fine. A real straight should give you no problems as long as it is shave ready and you learn how to strop it properly. Read all you can in the WIKI about beginner shaving and stropping. Again welcome and happy shaving.

Welcome to SRP. Glad you had a good shaving experience. IMO if you liked that you will love a shave ready "true" straight razor. See my sig line for avoiding nicks and cuts and below that the link to the SRP Wiki Paco mentioned.

Well, as a licensed barber, these are for razor cutting hair, don't know if you actually used it with the guard, these take various brands of replaceable blades & the blades can vary a lot in smoohtness, I personally find them rough compared to a real straight razor. We never used the guard style as the unstuctors considered them unprofessional. Depending on the brand & style of these razors you get, they take various sizes of blades & most are not interchangeable. We used a brand that takes half of a regular double edge blade, you have to snap it in half. Another thought, these blades will really iritate my neck, not a regular straight razor.

    Congratulations.

If you acheived a fairly smooth shave with that str8 razor--which isn't intended for the removal of facial hair--then you shouldn't have any trouble shaving at all once you get an expertly honed str8 razor from a vendor or the SRP Classifieds.

Just got another nearly BBS shave with this same razor. It could really tell it started to dull about halfway through this shave and may have gotten my first nick. I used Mama Bear's soap, a nice VDH Badger brush and got a good lather going, finished up my neck with a 1908 Gillette DE, the "straight" was to dull to continue to my neck. Then finished it all of with a nice glass of wine.

I am getting my real straight sometime this weekend off of the SRP classifieds.

Welcome to SRP. I am very happy for you that you had such a positive experience with the razor you used. That should give you the determination you need to succeed with a true straight.

As others here have said, you landed in the best forum you could hope to imagine. It is not just the advice and encouragement, but there is a kind of sage-like maturity here that will help you grow faster and in the right direction.

Good luck and post a lot,
    David
