I do one pass on my neck.

If I did any more than that, I'd have razor burn for a week.

I've just got skin sensitivity in the 100th percentile. It's my fair, super-sensitive Irish skin. My beard is fairly coarse, but my skin just HATES to be messed with.

So, I do one pass WITH the grain, and call it a day. Is it BBS? Nope. But it's smooth enough, and the irritation isn't worth doing another pass.

I should mention, to answer a post here, that I don't put extra pressure on the blade. Both of my razors were honed by Lynn so I am pretty sure that sharpness is not an issue.

Like I said, I can get my face BBS, but it takes 3-4 passes. It's really my neck that is most annoying.

Thank you all for your comments. I do try and enjoy my shaving in the morning. It's just that sometimes I am rushed and I end up using a bic razor. I know I know......

You should never need pressure, ever. Also You need to always use a scything motion with the razor to cut the hairs closely, this is the way straight razors were designed to cut, head on isn't really correct (Check old manuals). You need to slice with the blade while moving the blade downward (on wtg for example) to use scything motion.

The scything did seem to help, but I did one pass with a disposable razor. That's because I didn't shave for a few days, and I don't like to beat up my straight razor with a few day's growth as it is so tough at that point.

I'll see how it feels after a week of just SR shaving using the scything motion on my neck

BTW - I don't know why people keep telling me to not use pressure. I don't think that I said that I ever used pressure. I even said that I don't use pressure. I don't use pressure! Thanks.

History repeating. I used to say the same thing, and at about the same stage in the learning process, too. I was wrong.

LOL - didn't you say something about pressure? I'm sure somebody here is using too much pressure!

Actually, I think it's pretty normal to go down the list of common issues when somebody says they have problems. We just got carried away.

There is no such thing as a XTG on the neck for me, but I do a scything motion in some places and a slant/slicing motion in a couple of others. I go slow and pay attention and it works for me. ........

    1) How long does it take you go get a BBS shave?
    A. 30 minutes or so.

    2) How many passes do you do?
    A. 3

    3) Is your neck ever BBS? If yes, then how?
    A. Never. The grain goes west to east down there, impossible to cut across the grain without losing at least a pint.

    4) Any other tips you might want to share.
    A. Just a comment. You've shaved now for 8 months. From what you've described, I'm convinced that you are getting the best shave you can. One possiblity for improvement could be the type of razor if you have not tried different grinds. I find that, for me, very heavy classic razors give me closer shaves. Big W&Bs seem to plow the stuff off very close. Again, my face.

    Regards,
    Marc

I guess that I have only tried full hollow up until this point.

Actually I have a wedge that I borrowed from another SRP user. I could try that again, but it's a spike point so I didn't like it before. However, now that I have been shaving for awhile, and I don't usually nick myself anymore, I could try it again and see how that does. Perhaps I should try a half hollow too.

Is there an online razor rental place like Netflix? That's what I need!
