    Default Beginners Helping Beginners

I don't know if it has always been this way at SRP, but I have noticed a lot of beginners jumping in and encouraging other beginners and trading stories on their progression.

I don't just mean they are reading the posts, I mean they are actually posting within the beginner's thread.

Personally, I think that is fantastic. I realize they don't have the experience of the senior members, but they do share a lot of the same problems in real time. Really a positive gentlemanly thing to do.

I always knew this was a great place. This is just one more indicator of it.

I have used various forums on various subjects.

Whatever the subject newbies have in one thing in common and that is they (we) are all learning so can empatise with each other and will pick up on things being tricky which are now 2nd nature to more experienced members.

The encouragement here is great and the sharing of information both from newbies and experienced members very valuable.

    Hi Alembic,
+1 I think it's great also -it shows that members of SRP are willing to help each other no matter what level of skill they have achieved.
    Long may it continue!
    Kind regards

As long as it's not blind leading the blind it can be very good. Ensuring that part is where the experienced members come in.
Along these lines I have had several heated exchanges over the last year or two when members with absolutely no idea what they're talking about have been attempting to provide harmful advice. And when advised to stop they usually pull the ludicrous and false claim that all opinions are equal.

As long as helping is based on actual experience and not just unverified speculations it's all great. And that's what it is most of the time.

Most of us beginners do have the same questions. We are all finding answers and sharing. Great site.

    David,

Thank you so much for your excellent post. The manner in which the members of SRP are willing to share their expertise and knowledge is commendable. I cringe to think of what my first straight razor shave would have been like were it not for SRP.

Because I have been wet shaving for approximately 5 years I feel qualified to share advice concerning this topic with other new members. However, when it comes to technical advice concerning straight razor, shaving, I only feel qualified to pass along information that senior members have shared with me that I found helpful.

There is one topic regarding straight razor shaving which I feel qualified to pass on to new members: my unbridled passion and enthusiasm for this new art form I'm learning.

The camaraderie among new members is also very important to my learning process. It's a good feeling to know that someone else it just as intimidated by the sharp edge of the razor as you are. It's a source of encouragement knowing that someone else is going through the same thing you are.

That being said, it is incumbent on the new member to consider the source before acting on someone's advise.

    Happy shaving,
    Greg
