the new guy
Heya gents and ladies ... My name is Donnie (32 y/o) from the mountains in Colorado and I'll be attempting my first SR shave soon!! Kinda stoked I have to admit. Always cool getting into a lost art. In my wait for my razor to get to me from Straight Razor Designs, I've been doing ALOT of reading/studying. (I dont want to run into this totally ignorant) I stumbled across the "straights NOT to buy" and thank goodness mine wasn't on there. I got a Dovo "black star". After some research it seemed a concensus that it was a decent blade. But on the wiki site nothing was said about it in detail (good, bad, ...)
I know probably 5 of these same topics come up a week, "Is my razor good?" ... and I appologize for the redundancy.
This seems like a great place to meet some fellow straight razor shavers and pique your brains for info. Thanks again and I'll let ya know how the 1st shave (of just the sideburns haha) goes.

Thanked: 1371Welcome to SRP Donnie! Any Dovo will be a good razor. Getting it from SRD ensures that it will be well honed and shave-ready on arrival.
Congrats on your purchase!
Good for you for reading as much as you can before you get started.
Don't be afraid to jump right in and start asking questions if you have any.

Thanked: 1371Well, double welcome from a fellow firefighter and paramedic. I know how those nights go, but I wouldn't trade them for anything. Try to get some sleep, but more importantly, have fun!
Take it easy, and be safe!

Welcome from Alabama
Welcome aboard. If you're like me, waiting for your razor to arrive is like being a kid again waiting for Christmas morning.
Reading and asking questions makes a big difference - I know it did with me. I'm almost 1 month in on sr8 razor shaving and things are going fantastic, thanks to everyone here at SRP. I wouldn't switch back to a safety (or heaven forbid electric) for all the tea in China.

Welcome to SRP. Read my sig below before you do that first shave.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

dovo's are great razors.
for your first shave just take you're time and don't try to rush anything
this way you're less likely to get nick's

Welcome!
It sounds like you've done your homework, which is great..! The Black star is an excellent razor (it was my first one too in fact) and will serve you well.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Welcome from a fellow shaver up North. I hope your Dovo treats you as well as mine does me. One word of advice if you haven't already gleaned this from your reading. If you got it from SRD, I'd recommend you not strop it before your first shave. You don't want to compromise the expertly honed edge.

good morning ... nice to see so many cool guys on here. coming back to find so many welcomes and advice is very cool. So I said some cool things to SRDs in the notes when I made my order about how nice their website is and the selection the have, and I think they upgraded my shipping to express!! I got my set this morning already and it's a work of art. I'm sure you guys remember opening your 1st SR and thinking how cool it is ... well I have arrived.
So another rookie question I couldn't find an answer to on wiki. I got some sandalwood soap and a sweet marble dish. However, I don't want to hurt the soap when transferring to the dish. It's melted into a plastic container right now so just unwrapping and grating into my dish isn't an option. How do I get it out and into my nice new mug?

P.S.
Thanks for all the affirmation on my blade and all the nice welcomes again /bow
