Thread: Any Strop Suggestions?

Gotta agree with the SRD strop. I've got the 3" Premium I and love it. Even if you're a beginner who will tear up your strop, the SRD strop is modular. All you have to do is to unscrew the rivets and replace the leather....and the replacements are reasonably priced as well.

SRD 3" Latigo canvas and leather in RED or Black...work with ANY size blade!

I'm a newbie here as well. I started with a filly strop to figure things out and decide if I wanted to stick with str8s. I recently purchased a Kanayama. It's a bit pricey, but I like the feel I'm getting to my edges from it.

That said, I wish it had a handle on it (although I've never used a strop with a handle). If I were to do it over again, I'd probably have bought an SRD Premium version because it is less money, has the handle, and is 3" wide so you don't have to use an X-pattern... Then again, I can't say that I don't really like my results from the Kanayama.

I've got an SRD 3" black latigo, which is a great strop. It has the webbed fabric on it as well, which is very effective.

If your starting out I would go with a basic inexpensive strop. You want one that is quality and will do the job but not one that if you seriously damage will make you cry.

There is always the chance to nick a strop but when you are starting out that chance can be very high.,

You might come to prefer Latigo, Horsehide, Russian (here meaning both the tanning, fleshside-out and/or a type of raised pattern), or Cowhide. Many like to have at least one of each to suit the day's mood. The only way to know is to try 'em all...

Tony Miller's Latigo is probably my favorite strop overall, usually available with an optional practice strop.

I was about to put in a word for Tony's 3" Red Latigo when Sticky did it for me. So, I'll just +1 his vote. It's a great strop.

How does the SRD Premium I compare to the Vintage Blades 3" Latigo that I own?

Are these similar? I have seen so many positive reviews of the SRD strops that I was wondering if it was worth springing for one?

Personally, I would go with any reasonably priced 3" latigo strop sold by any of the vendors who advertise here at SRP.

If I am not mistaken, the VB strop is the same as the SRD black latigo. The Premium I has thicker leather, has less draw but smoother, IME in between latigo and horsehide.
