Thanked: 0Which Shavette should I get
Hello everyone,
Im looking for a good Shavette to see if a straight razor might be for me.
In my time browsing the forms Ive heard there not the same, feel sharper, and so on but I see 3 main factors.
- Price $30 vs. $180
- No services such as sharpening/honing needed
- No Strop needed $50-100
I figured it best to start with one of these to see if I would prefer straight blade shaving.
If anyone would recomend a good shavete, ive seen these would like to know your opinions.
Amazon.com: dovo shavette straight razor - Health & Personal Care
Also what blades would you recomend? are the cheap Derbys fine?
and last but not least would anyone recomend a good shaving cream, gel,oil etc that they would recomend.
Thanks for your help

the parker SR2 has a pretty good blade holder
add a blade sampler and you probably find a blade to fit you
1. its 15 vs. 80
2. razor come ready for use from a good wendor(some even give the second honing free)
3.a strop starts at 20 or 26 if you look around( ruprazor/illinois)
4.a complete set from a good vendor with strop, brush, soap, razor would give you a good kit for a pretty good price
if you got "the body shop" nearby there macca root shave cream is pretty goodLast edited by janivar123; 06-17-2010 at 09:14 AM.

Thanked: 6Hi! I didn't like my Dovo shavette. I quit using it after two shaves. It seemed cheap and flimsy. Just my opinion on the Dovo. But I bet you can find a cheap razor and strop around here which you can sell if you don't like them.

I started out with a Fromm Hair Shaper.. found it at a local Sally's Beauty Supplies store for 5 bucks and a set of replacement blades was another 5 for 10 blades.
It was a very different shaves between the Fromm and a true Straight even through it is similar in design for me but YMMV.

Thanked: 190If you want to try out straight shaving, perhaps the longer blades for the black holder is more to your liking. That is what I use.
My other disposable straights have 2.25" and 2.50" blades.

Welcome to SRP. Personally I would recommend a true straight razor over a replaceable blade gizmo. If you want to go first class and don't mind spending the $$ there is a great deal on the Cadillac of 'shavettes' here in the classifieds with extras. Not mine BTW, just thought to point it out. Read my sig below to avoid nicks and cuts and follow the link at the bottom for more great info.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Which Shavette . . .
Hello, Straightnoob:
If you plan on the straight-razor-with-replaceable-blades, I suggest the Feather Artist Club or the smaller and less expensive Monsieur Charles. They both are substantial and quality. I have used both, and like them.
Eventually, though, let's hope you will throw an eye on a regular straight razor.

Obie

I have to agreee with the others. I think if you at some point would like to go the straight route just do it now. You can get a basic setup for not that much money and basic maint. isn't that big a deal. If you really want a shavette and want to stay with it I would recommend the feather. It probably is the closest to a true straight in feel but really, a shavette isn't a straight.

I have to agree with everyone else, why do it twice and spend the money twice?

I agree with the previous posts. Personally, I think that purchasing a shavette is a waste of time and money. IMHO I would purchase an entry level razor & strop set. If you find that straight razor shaving isn't for you, you can always sell the razor and strop or at least the razor in the SRP Classifieds forum.
