I bought my first razor/strop set from Vintage Blades about a month ago for about $140. I then bought a mug, razor stand and soap dish at target for a total of $20. My first brush was an omega badger and cost about $29.99.
Within two weeks I had purchased two more razors from the classifieds here and they have treated me much better than my two new production razors.
I think you can get started for cheaper than $300. I highly recommend getting a vintage shave ready razor from the classifieds here and then piecing together the other stuff.
With that said, I don't think you would be doing wrong if you started with that setup.

Thanked: 2591Start with something from the classifieds, you will go through a few blades before you figure out what grind and size you like. then treat yourself with something new and expensive.

I have both the Dovo "Best" and the Boker "Edelweiss."
The Boker feels amazing in your hand. Has really nice weight and the scales are two notches above the Dovo. In fact, I can't imagine a better quality razor for that price.
However, I have shaved twice with the Boker and neither shave has been good at all. In fact, my two shaves with the Boker were down right depressing and I had to switch off to another razor mid shave both times. It just was not cutting my whiskers at all.
I'm not sure what to make of this. Could it be the blade? Sure...but more likely my beginner technique. Again, my best shaves so far have come from blades purchased on the classifieds here at SRP.
Edit: I wanted to edit this to make sure you understand that my experience with these blades is coming from a beginner. Check the review on the Boker here and you may get a more realistic review of the razor.Last edited by Fbones24; 06-21-2010 at 12:50 AM. Reason: Clarification

id say both stores sell exellent qualety
get a 5/8 or 6/8 kit with a 2,5 or 3 inch strop
how you choose the blade is only up to you
or price vs looks
the difference between (the good) brands isnt big enough to make the members on this site to agree whats best anyway

I think these c-mons are made by Dovo and aren't quite the same as the vintage c-mons. But the same can be said for all current production brands.
I don't think it matters too much which one you pick. You can give a call to the vendor and ask them about the differences and their opinion.

I'm a sales man and I love to be sold or I'll walk right out of your store. Like everyone feeling importent is very importent.
I'm going to Call SRD, and if they don't know what their talking about or if they can't close a sale like all the other .coms I've called I think I have to chose my own.
