Anything but the canned stuff ...seriously, you won;t go wrong with ANY creme, soap or combination of thereof
Try them and see what works. Morty's formula for uberlather is a good one...not the only one, but a good one.
Whatever you do, here's the KEY that worked for me:
More time prepping beard = better, smoother shaves

Thanked: 1Yeah I've been using shaving soap and a brush. Some day I'd like to get into überlather, but for now I'm working on getting a good lather with just soap. I've already discovered the joys of moving past "goop" as you call it, don't worry about that . I was just perplexed as to what sort of components went into überlather. I didn't know there was a difference between cream and "goop", although I suppose I should have known better than to assume everyone on here who was talking about using cream wasn't stooping so low as to use drugstore aerosol.

Spend some time with puck of Williams shave soap.
If you find Van Der Hagen shave soap first try it too.
My local market has it for $1.30 or so. I spent
an afternoon one day and tried 500 of the 700
different ways to make a lather. Too much
soap, too little, too hot, too cold, too wet etc... and
just get a feel for making a lather. Back then
I was nervous about damaging an expensive brush
so I used an eight dollar boar brush... Best
ten bucks I have spent in a long time and I still
use the brush now that it is well broken in....
(I still enjoy Williams too).
