Thanked: 0Traveling with a straight razor
Hi
Just got my blade yesterday and still learning on shaving. I'm going on a longer trip on August and I was wondering how to make sure the razor stays in one piece during the trip. There's no way I can get a straight razor past airport security in hand luggage, so it'll have to go to the cargo.
Have you had any problems travelling with one? Don't they check the cargo bags, too with x-rays. I think the blade will stay intact if I pack it in a tight container with some bubble wrap.
Thanks
Galen

I put it in a toothbrush case. put the razor in your suitcase and not in your hand bagage!
Works well for me.

Definitely do checked-in luggage or (like I'm doing today, actually) send it in the mail to the place you're going ahead of time.
When I've traveled with a straight razor I've never had any problems with it being broken or anything. This includes international travel where they go through your luggage. Toothbrush holder tube is a great idea.

In today's climate this can be a nasty tangle
so consider options.
Since you are still learning to use it consider lightening
your baggage and just bring a brush, shave soap and a couple
of tossable but single edge razors like the BiC yellow handled
disposable. A big part of learning is in the brush and
lathering part so this is in keeping with your goals.
Do pack your shave gear all together in a kit so it is clear what
your purpose is in case you or the porter make an error
and checks the wrong bag.
In some cases a kit bag if well constructed can be checked by itself
so even if you always intend to check it through you may
find that you need to have it checked in the last min. i.e. Before
you place it on the X-ray table and they confiscate it and
or arrest you.
Others noted that a toothbrush case works, another hint is
to roll it in paper towel and then in a bit of bubble wrap
lightly secured with rubber bands (not tape). The paper towel
helps it breath and dry. The bubble wrap is just good padding
and will help match the roll to the size of the rubber bands.
Tape cannot be reused the way rubber bands can.
There is no way to game the system so do not try.

I was once given the advice of putting a CLEARLY VISIBLE label on the straight case 9whatever it is, toothbrush case, etc) reading "SHARP INSTRUMENT OPEN WITH CAUTION" and put that label over the opening of the case. That way 1) no one that manually searches your luggage can be hurt and 2) you'll know if it has been openened.
Every time I check bags, a straight goes in the luggage, have had no problems.

Whatever you do, don't put it in your carry-on.
I also like the tooth brush holder idea. That will keep it closed and sealed from any accidental leaks of toiletries.
