Finally!
Well, gents, after months of toying around with str8s (first my son's Dovo, then the Filarmonica DT 12 I got for Father's Day from the classifieds), I finally got my first full str8 shave without cleaning up with the Super Speed DE or my Gillette Sensor! All the elements finally came together for me in what I would call an almost intuitive leap of confidence and smoothness!
And though I finished up with a bit of stubborn stubble around the neck and chin, it was a smooth shave (other than that); I was okay enough with it to go to my dental appointment, and the pretty hygienist didn't seem to mind.
So if any other newbies are trying to wean themselves away from "cleaning up" with DE's or multi-blades, a few factors, IMO, put me over the edge:
1. Time and patient practice; no substitute for learned muscle memory!
2. Careful stropping and blade-testing my Fili on leg hair: refreshing the edge w/15 light laps on CrOX/linen, about 100 colored newsprint, then the usual unpasted linen and 3" TM Latigo.
3. Godrej menthol mist-I made up billowy clouds of this in my son's homemade glazed clay shave bowl using the inexpensive Tweezerman badger they also gave me for Father's Day (Nice brush for less than $20). Maybe the lanolin in this made it so slick, but I really "got my glide on" this morning, and what a refreshing menthol blast in a mezmerizing scent!
4. STRETCHING! This, and using the proper angles, scything strokes on the neck, short repeat strokes on the cheeks, a light touch-all really took the hair off easily. The videos by Jockey helped me put it all together!

Thanks, Utopian-By the way, big Thoreau fan myself! I have taught his works, and often quote him in my writing: "Men have become the tools of their tools." And to think, Blackberries hadn't been invented when he said this...Aaron
