Thanked: 0You Decide For Me, What Rasor I Buy (And anything else)
Hey guys,
I picked up the Filly Strop:
https://ruprazor.com/store/index.php...mart&Itemid=32
And a basic boar brush kit:
https://ruprazor.com/store/index.php...mart&Itemid=32
As far as buying a razor, I am completely overwhelmed at what I need. I don't understand the sizing or the specifications, only that it needs to be 'shave ready'.
So, can you guys decide for me? I'll buy a razor someone here recommends. Thanks!
Also, do I need aftershave/cream?

Welcome srp.
at first easy part. Yes you do need after shave.
Now hard part.
This is basic rules for newbies.
Buy shave ready Blade.( seller gives you guarantee )
Depends how much money are you willing to spend.
if you are around 100 and more go with SRD.
Now if you are low on cash then go with srp classified.
Size
you will need Round point 5/8 or 6/8.
if you choose to buy spike point ask seller to round the tip in this case you should be safe.
hope this helps.

You need a shave-ready razor. Vintage is often considered to be at least equal to and often better than modern day razors.
Go to the classifieds and buy a shave-ready razor there from one of our members. Especially those from honemeisters are usually good.Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr.

Any strop from Kenrup will be good, you can get a boar brush, soap and bowl at most drug stores or Walmart for less than 10$.

Would this be a good product?
And what kind of aftershave is recommended?

You've got some good advice from prior posters. As a recent straight razor convert, I can tell you that the razors you pick up in the classifieds here (especially from a honemeister) are a great way to start as you get a good quality shave ready razor. Also, if you look in the vendor's corner, holli4pirating has some great new "old stock" swedish razors that he is offering to newer members (if they aren't already sold out). These will come shave ready as well...
As for your other purchases, I started with a filly myself. It's a great starter strop. I think you'll be very happy with it as a starter. The only downside to it is that it has no linen/cotton, but that is a "nice to have," not a necessity.
Good luck with your start to this journey. Read the wiki, and keep us informed as you go. I've found the members to be incredibly helpful answering questions for me as I try to learn this seemingly "aging/dying" skill...

Wiss is still an exceptional name in cutting tools and the seller, Manah, has had a great reputation here for quite sometime.

I don't know the particular brand, but Manah has a great reputation as a honemeister and it looks like a good razor.
As for aftershave, it's really a matter of personal preference. I personally have used a number. Currently, I alternate between Nivea Sensitive Skin (a great inexpensive option IMHO) and Geo. Trumpers Skin Food (a lot more pricey, but I like it a lot)...

If I get to decide let me see here... Hmmm.... I think it's going to have to be a Mistro Livi, custom of course, but only Damascus steel will do. Yes, yes this is going to work out fine. I'll even test it out for you, free of charge, for no more than a single year. Unless that year happens to fall on a leap year than we'll have to renegotiate. Let me just find my paperwork and will be all set. You and I are going to be great friends I can see it now.
