    Default Razor Cleaning

Hey fellas, I have a Dovo Special 5/8 Tortoise that I've been using for a month. This morning when I opened it, it seemed like it was a little harder open than usual. Any ideas on what might be happening? This also got me thinking: I thoroughly rinse, wipe, and dry my razor after each shave. Is there any other weekly or monthly maintenance that I should be doing?

Sounds like you're still getting moisture in there and rust may be starting. It could be happening when you're not even using it.Do you store your razors in the bathroom where the shower is?Carbon steel razors are prone to rust and should be oiled after each use if there is any danger of moisture.I use Camellia oil in a spray bottle.Just a little spritz at the pivot on both sides,a few open and close cycles to work it in,then spread the rest in a thin coating over the rest of the razor(even the scales). Then wipe off the excess w/ tissue.

+1 on Alan's advice. You should lubricate the pivot of your razor with some oil at least every other day or every other use. Camellia oil or mineral oil works just fine.

I use Tuf-Glide on my razor's pivot. It comes in a small bottle with a needle dispenser to get in those tight places on your razor.

To deal with any rust/corrosion that may have built up in that area of your razor beforehand, use some oil and some dental floss.

    I hope this helps.

My razor seems to be getting looser at the pins. Why does this happen?

My wife has one of those ultrasonic jewelery cleaners, would it be safe to use that on my razor? If so, how often?

You need to tighten up your pivot pin. Do a search for detail instructions over at the workshop.

The problem is moisture...submersing it would only make it worse. The deal with the Dovo Special is that to my knowledge, it does not come with blade washers. to seperate the blade from the scales. At this point, if you have rust, the only thing you can do is to have it unpinned, cleaned, and repinned. If you send it off, have your restorer put some washers in.

Mineral oil or tuf glide gets my vote, for loose pivots try tapping the pin lightly with the back of a spoon or small jewelers hammer. CAREFUL!
