I Have The Bug
Hey fellas, I caught the bug and need some advice. I 'happened' to be perusing a local antique shop today, and came across a Wade & Butcher. It is a 5/8 spike that is stamped 'Special' and 'Sheffield'. As I am in Utah, with a very arid climate, there is no rust or pitting; the entire blade is tarnished though. No chips or cracks, and the bevel seems to be very even. Cream colored scales are kind of pinched towords the wedge end, but in otherwise good condition. I think I can talk the guy down to $30. I know that it's hard to say, without seeing it, but does this seem like a worthwhile purchase? If so, any recommendations for someone to clean up and hone this bad boy for me? This will be only my second razor, I just want to make sure that I'm not getting in over my head. Thanks.

Thanked: 13245One of the best out there actually,,,
I am honestly not a huge fan of Sheffield razors for my face, in fact I only own two in my whole collection (about 100 razors)... Everyone has a type that fits them, and most Sheffielders just ain't my type...
But the two I own which are the smoothest ones I have found one is a 5/8 W&B Special the other is a fantastic Bengall 6/8...
As to the price ???? you can see the razor, I can't, but if it is in good to excellent condition, it sounds fair...

When I sw the title of the tread I though you were going to say you got a Gold Bug Razor.
$30 is a good price if the razor is in good shape needing maybe a general cleaning and a basic honing. Without pictures you are the judge. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

I agree with everyone else. I got a special off ebay a while ago...(didn't turn out to be in that good a condition) even at that, I still find it to be the nicest razor I own in terms of looks and feel (I cleaned it up and honed it).
It honed really easily. (at least in my case)
