Thread: Do I need to hone a new razor?

I would imagine that it would not need to be stropped, I know from the two I got from other vendors that they included a note starting that a Stropping was not necessary prior to the first shave. I did not get one from srd or whipped dog so I can not confirm that with those vendors.
I would also think that of your Stropping is not terrible you would not needed to do a maintenance hone for at least a few months if not longer.
Hope this helps.

Thanks...no note from the vendor about stropping, but I did get a certificate for one free re-honing, so I guess that pushes out the need to purchase a hone of my own for a bit longer. What do you think about the 12K stone being the one to get as a first stone?

Since you probably will not need to stay from the bevel up...(I can only assume of course) that getting a finishing stones of that grit would be acceptable..
Have you looked into barber Hones at all...or even chromium oxide paste on a strop for maintenance??

Not yet. I only spoke to the vendor and he recommended getting a 12K to start out with, suggesting that using a lower grit stone at first could actually dull the razor.
