I've heard tissue recommended, and have used it to good effect (although I often get lazy and use my finger). The Q-Tip sounds like a good solution though. The drawback with my finger is that it is too fat to get in crevices (like near pivot), and may also impart some salt. I've also heard putting a drop on your pivot pin to get between the scales and shank and pivot. All sound like good ideas.
Also, I've heard Lynn recommend using tissue and NOT a rag as cotten is more abrasive and more likely to impact your edge ... so toilet tissue or kleenex is preferred over wash cloth, rag, etc.
