Backwards
During my most recent shave I thought I'd try a little experiment. I used to shave backwards with my Mach 3 and I thought I'd try it with my str8. It was a great idea! I went against the grain first and then did a pass wtg. Closest, least irritated shave I've ever gotten. Gonna do that from now on!

Thanked: 3Same here. Here's another person doing the same thing. He's the one that inspired me to go ATG first.

IMHO , there are really no right or wrong ways to shave with a straight razor . Beginners should follow the basic guidelines , but after that you will develop your own personal technique that works best for you . As Yogi Berra might say , if it works for you , it works for you .

I do it everyday. First ATG, second WTG, third XTG. Works for me and I feel dirty if I don't do it.
I love the smell of shaving cream in the morning!

It's known as blade buffing and if you do it lightly enough you get an irritation free closer shave. Some find it too harsh on their skin.
