I would check the classifieds on the site for an inexpensive yet quality razor and/or strop. Then checkout your local Walmart or drugstore for a soap and brush combo. You should be able to get into this for just shy of a 100$.

    speldeth,
If you don't see a razor in the classifieds that you can afford, don't lose heart. Just keep checking back two or three times a day. I bought my first straight razor from the SRP Classifieds in February from LarryAndro. I paid all of $23.00 (including shipping) and it came shave-ready sharp!

That sort of a deal does not happen every day, but if you're patient and keep checking back, sooner or later you'll be rewarded with a quality shave ready razor that fits your budget.

Wait, here's Larry's Web site. Have a look at what he's got then shoot him an email. Let him know a satisfied customer sent you.

You can't go wrong with one of Larry's razors!
    Namaste,
    Morty -_-

    Welcome!

+1 on the classifieds, thats a great way to get started. There is also the option of making a strop yourself if you prefer, and there are tutorials in the Wiki on how to do this. The Wiki is linked in my sig line below.

You can get a synthetic or boar hair brush very cheaply from somewhere like Walmart and soaps such as Van Der Hagen can be had for a very reasonable cost.

Good luck and keep us posted!

New guy in college, eh? Been there, done that... It's a bear

The classifieds are a great place to start, you can find plenty of razors at great prices there... You can also try out SRD for high quality kits... They sell strop + razor kits, and Strop, razor, brush and soap kits... That's a great place to start out.

    Welcome aboard!

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

Good advice has been tendered here. If you go with whipped dog for a strop and razor and walmart for your brush and soap, you'll be checking in at about $70. If you go with the classifieds and walmart, you'll be looking at about $100. Both of these options are completely reasonable IMHO
