Thanked: 35shavettes just arnt Str8s
I will be doing some traveling so i decided to buy a shavette to take rather than risk my awesome w&b's. I know i would loose them, and looing them in another state could mean loosing for good. I got a magic razor shavette. I decided in the time comming up to my trip id start to shave with it to get used to it........... and its just not my w&b. I miss spots and that drives me nutz. I guess im gonna have to keep working at it.
but the main reason for this post is, if you think of buying a shavette instead of a str8........ there just not the same.

Thanked: 48agreed they are not the same. however you can get great shaves with a shavette as i just did 1 hour ago. mostly i shave with a straight but when time is tight i pull out the shavette . when i travel i carry 3 razors, 2 straights and a shavette. the one thing a shavette excells in is the hollows of my neck , there that short blade shines.mine is the old cheap kind where you break a double edge in half. i find that a straight razors edge is maybe not as sharp but a lot smoother and easyer on my skin.the shavette is harsher for the frist 3 shaves or so and comes on its own by the third and needs to be repaced by the 5th.try diffrent brands of blades some work better for me than others and back way off on the pressure.

Thanked: 7Can you take the edge off of a shavette by pulling a new blade through styrofoam the way some people pre-dull a feather DE blade before the first use? A shavette is basically a straight, or "semi-straight" as the case may be, with a disposable blade correct?

I think much depends on the coarsenss of the facial hair and the toughness of the skin. I'm an old guy with a coarse beard and leathery skin who has been shaving for lots of years and I like my blades as sharp as I can get them. I routinely finish my honing with diamond sprays and/or pastes.

Thanked: 1I have heard there is also a large difference between a shavette with half a DE blade and a disposable blade straight using an injector blade. I don't have first-hand knowledge, though.

I've heard that the differences have to do with the angle of the disposable razor being more acute than that of a straight. Can anyone elaborate on this?
