Fabric strop, paste, or rehoning?
One of my razors has become a little dull and this is the first time it's been noticeable. Which should I do? What's that fabric strop for? What about paste? Do I have to hone? How do I know when to use what?

Thanked: 4942If you're not using the fabric for every day stropping, you can put some chromium oxide on it or on the back of it in case you do decide to use it and do 10 light X strokes on the treated side followed by 50-60 strokes on the leather. Most of the time, this will bring the life back into the razor for a while. Remember not to cake on the chromium oxide. Just a little bit to where you can see the green color on the fabric.
Have fun,
Lynn

Thanks. For the future, when do I know that that's not good enough and I need to hone?

Oh, also, wouldn't doing x-strokes on the fabric cut it?

Thanked: 4942When you put some on and it still pulls.
I sure hope an X stroke on the strop doesn't cut it. Yikes......you are trailing the edge when you strop. If you have a 3 inch strop, don't worry about it.
Have fun,

Plus one for Chrome Ox or .5 micron diamond spray on the fabric.
Strop as you normally would for 10 and only 10 laps (up and back is one lap).
Then CLEAN THE BLADE WELL. You want to avoid transferring the strop treatment to your daily strop.
Then strop on the leather.
Hope this helps!

you have to pay for the premium membership to gain access to information on the "x stroke"
Out of my curiosity, how many shaves do you think you got from your razor before you felt it start to dull? Like the other guys said, some fine abrasive media such as chromium oxide on your fabric ought to help keep your razor up to snuffLast edited by hoglahoo; 08-27-2010 at 03:55 PM.
