getting better and better...
...thought I let you guys know.
Been into straight shaving for about a month now. Started shaving daily about a week ago and it really gets better and better. Smoother shaves (never do ATG, only WTG and XTG) and less skin irritation as I go...
Cool stuff. Love this place, love you guys, love straight razor shaving.
Thanks.

Congratulations!
One of the nice things about wet shaving and using a straight razor is that the experience continues to get better no matter how long you you have been at it. There are some super skilled and experienced guys here on SRP who have been using straights for decades and still post regularly about some new technique or product that has increased their enjoyment.
Please keep us posted on your progress.

Guys
thanks for the feedback.
I am starting to notice that I get less skin irritation than back in the day when I stuck to my old shaving habits (i.e. Mach3 Razor + Gillette canned shaving cream).
I still get razor burns, but as I progress they seem to get less.
What I do really enjoy though is the fact that I don't get any pimples after shaving anymore. None.
I suspect this is a hygiene issue though. Can't replace a Mach3 Cartridge after every shave. Would just be too expensive. Feel free to prove me wrong/flame/discuss on that thought.
However, my shaves are not as close as they were when I used to do a two pass (1 WTG, 1 ATG) with my Mach3. But you know what? I don't care. I get the opportunity to shave again sooner. Ha!
Now that's real progress. IMHO.

Shiznix,
I'm in a similar situation myslef, as I only shave with one pass (WTG) every morning. Since starting with straight shaving, my skin on my face (especially my neck) has dramatically improved, with a noticeable reduction in red bumps and ingrown hairs. When I attempt a triple pass shave; however, I still get quite a bit of irritation.
I'm content to use the one-pass method, as it allows me to shave every morning and I quite enjoy the "moment of zen" it provides. There's really nothing like it...

Here is something that I did a few years back that should shock you. I had both of my straights out for honing at the time and I wandered into the kitchen at home, one morning and shaved with a common kitchen knife. While it is possible and rather easy given the knowledge and skill that people on this forum have I have only one thing to say about the experience - the reason that we have razors that are dedicated to shaving is that the kitchen knife is not really balanced so that you can shave with it. While a kitchen knife can get as sharp as a straight can its not really balanced so that one can shave with it.

Thanked: 2I have only been at for a total of about (8) shaves. Each shave has been slightly better than the previous one. I had the opportunity to contrast straight razor shaving with using a Mach 3 during the last two days. Due to my wife returning to work and my hectic morning schedule, I had to shave with a Mach 3 like I used to. I haven't had a single bit of razor burn since I went cold turkey with a straight razor. As I type this message, I can feel the discomfort and razor burn that was commonplace with the Mach 3 and its only 2:15pm. I will not be going back to the Mach 3 again - it may be time to finish the second bathroom upstairs to carve out a little (very little) shave den for myself
Best regards to all.
