Thanked: 0Shavette?
Hi guys, I have been lurking for some time now, and had a question. What is your opinion of the shavette? I'm a newbie, and I want to give the straight a shot... but convincing the wife to drop ~$100 (or more) on a razor/supplies would be prohibitive.
Would dropping the ~$25 on the shavette give me a good starting point? Would this be a representative shave?
Let me know what you think.

That is a great way to start shaving with straight razor, it's always sharp, and later, you can use it when traveling. Highly recomended...

Another option is to contact one of the members and buy a vintage shave ready razor from them. You can probably pick up a nice one for less than $50 shipped, and you'll know what a good str8 feels like. I'm not against the shavettes, but they shave differently, and if you're going to eventually upgrade to a real str8, there's another learning curve involved. Might as well start off with a good straight. Just my $.02. I have a few for sale as well, depending on what you're looking for.

I agree with Joe on this one. Check out the
website of Bill Ellis known as urleebird on
this forum. www.billysblades.com
For a strop check out www.thewellshavedgentleman.com
this is the site of Tony Miller who is also a forum
member. You could email him from the link
on his site and ask if he has any strops
that are 2nds. Nothing wrong with them,
probably cosmetic.
Hope this helps,
Terry

Welcome To The Boards, jvanhuis
I never seriously considered the shavettes myself. I knew they would feel different, 'wrong' and I wanted to stop using disposable blades, and that includes the shavette inserts.
$100, of even $200 isn't much when you consider that you won't have to keep buying disposables for the rest of your life. The qualityof the shave achievable will make it all worth it very soon anyway.
Most guys who don't stick with the straight do so because they don't have access to the important information and support provided here. I say get a shave ready razor from a member and go for it.

I started with a cheap Shavette imitation. Check you local beauty supply stores. I picked mine up with two 5-packs of Personna blades for about $12. A shavette isn't as forgiving as a straight razor, in my opinion. This just means you have to be more precise and have good technique which will transfer over if you decide it's right for you.

Thanked: 0I would recommend checking out the thread "sound advice for newbies" it covers this topic in depth then you can decide for yourself. It is also on the newbies corner section of this site.

If JvanHuis lives in the Netherlands (which his name implies) contact me....I have a few blades that I'd be willing to part from for a very affordable price I think. Plus the shipping will cost practically nothing...
