I'm pretty sure the canned stuff has alcohol in it. And if it does, that stuff will naturally dry out your face. I say go for the hand made lather.

after reading this thread over again.. i somewhat forgot your true question.. but let me say this..
i havn't used a can of pressurized shave product since i was probably 15.. there are tons of great shaving creams and gels and stuff that are perfectly moisturizing and all natural.. i must have shaved with my mach3 for years using an aloe based cream from a company called jason.. their products can be found at whole foods market and other natural markets.. i've even spotted them at cvs from time to time.. they shave cream does not require a brush and infact has jojoba beads in it to aid in lifting the hairs while you apply the product to your face using your hands.. there are also tons of other great products out there..
i did eventually pick up the brush and a puck of soap while still using my mach3.. and to be honest.. i always had a good shave..
now that i shave with a feather artist club razor.. i regularly employ a brush.. but occasionally.. i still pull out the brushless products.. i get good results with either..
as for a can of barbasol or that green gel that magically turns to foam when exposed to oxygen.. not something i'd want to use on my body.. i love myself far too much for that.
