Yeowwww!
About two months ago I decided to enter the world of SR shaving. After reading a lot on this and other sites I decided to learn wet shaving technique with a DE first. Thoroughly enjoying myself. Never knew shaving could be such a relaxing, luxurious ritual.
Two weeks ago I bought a Shavette and Personna ridge back blades. I started by doing just the down pass on the cheeks and then added the chin and neck. I finished the shave with the DE.
OK. Everything is going fine. I put a new blade in the shavette yesterday and sliced off a layer of my chin the size of a 2 and 1/2 dollar gold piece! Yeowwww!! Happened so fast I'm not sure what I did!! This is a crazy way to shave!!
Ended up laughing my ass off with the wife while bleeding all over a washcloth!! Thought about putting the shavette away, locking up the blades, and never touching a naked blade to my face, again. But I won't give up. This stuff is addicting!
Had to happen some time. Hope it doesn't happen again.
I want to say thanks to all the folks here for the wealth of advice you've put together. Great stuff!

Thanked: 6Now that's the attitude to have! I'd say you've christened yourself nicely. Look at it as a momento. Haha.
Have fun, it gets better every time

Yikes sounds like a clean shaven chin
use a small scissor for a while on that spot
Now you could try a little less pressure next time you shave

I would not shave with a straight again until you get a shave ready "true" straight razor. I started straight shaving with a Parker Shavette and then got a few shave ready straights and there is no comparison! There are plenty of decent priced shave ready straights in the classifieds.

Thanks for the advice.
Thanks for the advice about the scissors. I'll give that a try.
I've read a lot of the warnings about shavettes and a few positive remarks as well. I'm researching stropping and honing. I have an ebay straight on which to develop my skills. A friend has an old strop for me and I have a perforated hone I bought at a garage sale 20 years ago. I've been reading up on Norton stones. I'm sure I'll get there, but it will take some time.
I am keeping an eye out for a 1/4 hollow round point. I think it would be a good starter. It would be even better with less than a 3 inch edge.
I wouldn't mind getting some advice on a honemeister.
Thanks.

Same here. I am still very new to this myself. I started in June useing a shavette for about two months before I ordered my actual str8. I got nicks / cuts galore! Still used it though as I still enjoyed the experience (re-reading that it sounds like I am an idiot, but it's the truth!) The first stroke I took with my shavette I had an approx. 3" long vertical bright red line down my right cheek.... oops
I now have a Boker from SRD and have been using that. While the idea and principle are similar/the same, the real str8 is WAY better. I'm glad I am not the only one who cut his face up and was still said, "Man, this is cool!"
Qatsats, it sounds like you will stick with it; I hope you do. Get a real str8 whenever you can. I would recommend SRD or the classifieds here. Both have great prices and will ensure you get a truly shave ready razor. Be sure to let us know how your progress is coming.
